About Critters

Critters started with a dream and a passion. Captain Scott has always loved to fish and starting fishing with his dad as soon as he could walk. He and his dad would fish off the Redondo Beach pier all the time. His dad, John Honaker, was a woodshop teacher at Mira Costa High School in Manhattan Beach and this is where Scott learned how to work with wood. In 1977 he built his first boat at the woodshop and starting fishing as much as he could. He than starting selling his catch and saw that he could pay his bills and do what he really loved, fishing. In 1986, he wanted to expand his fishing business and he built his current boat, Critters. It took over 6 months to build with lots of sweat and money, but he built it exactly how he knew it would fish the best.

He has been able to make a living and raise a family on a profession he truly loves. . Fishing is hard work, there have been many lean years and profitable years. One thing is for sure, Captain Scott loves what he does and plans on fishing for a very long time.

Captain Scott’s wife, Denise, is the second half of Critters. She does all the things besides fishing :). They have known each other for 41 years after meeting on Catalina and have been married for 33 years. In 2020, they started offering their seafood directly to customers with dock sales. They say meeting and getting to know their customers has been the best experience in all their years of owning Critters.
